Commissioned by Birmingham Museums Trust, throughout 2023, GRAIN Projects have worked in collaboration with asylum seekers and refugees resident in one of Birmingham’s government assigned hotels.

Workshops have taken place using a range of photography equipment and techniques, including large and medium format film, digital cameras, collage and Ai. Stephen Burke, Dan Burwood and Mark Murphy have been leading the sessions with men at the hotel supported by Anu Gamanagari. Portraits have been made and landscapes and interiors created based on people’s experiences, journeys to the UK and their hopes and dreams for the future.

The photographs are being brought together as a small publication designed by Chris Neophytou, Out of Place Books.

Commissioned by Birmingham Museums Trust with the support of Refugee Action.
