New work by Zillah Bowes (UK) and Turjo Mushfiq (Bangladesh)

The photographs were created during an international residency, in which artists Zillah Bowes and Turjo Mushfiq visited Bangladesh and the UK. Through dialogue and exchange, they explored themes of resistance and reimagining in response to the climate emergency.  

Hosted by GRAIN Projects and Pathshala Media Institute, the residency included research and development, meetings with artists, curators and gallerists, plus exploration of new production and presentation methodologies. Both artists make work that considers the climate emergency, addressing habitat loss, the environment, community activism, resilience and sustainability. The residency informed their thinking and approach as they created new work for exhibition here
in Birmingham and in Dhaka.  

Zillah Bowes is an artist and filmmaker with a practice across photography, film, installation and poetry. With a spiritual enquiry around climate change and biodiversity, her work frequently explores the relationship between the individual and the natural environment. Her recent practice enquires how landscapes shaped by human use are responding to environmental crisis and how these spaces might be aesthetically re-framed in visual terms.

Turjo Mushfiq is a photographer and educator based in Dhaka, Bangladesh.  He has also curated exhibitions for the Chobimela International Photography Festival, Dhaka.  He is interested in photobooks, publishing and analogue photography. He completed his MA in Documentary and Photojournalism from University of the Arts London and has exhibited his work internationally including in Europe. His work is about the human condition and the impact that the environment has on communities and individuals.

The project is a new collaboration between GRAIN Projects (UK) and Pathshala Media Institute (Bangladesh), part of British Council’s Connections Through Culture.
