In search of George Cartlidge ‘In September a Staffordshire Hilltop’
14th October 2014 - 22nd February 2015
Potteries Museum & Art Gallery, Stoke-on-Trent
From the series Dr Bird ‘Conquering Clouds’
Artist David Bethell, performing as Dr Bird, has made new work for his series ‘Conquering Clouds’ with a handmade pinhole camera. The photographs are currently been exhibited at the Potteries Museum & Art Gallery as part of ‘The Artist and the City’.
David Bethell has been described as an explorer, a labourer, an inventor, a fell runner and a documenter of how we live and work on the land, then and now. He is an artist and curator. Each work is site specific and for this new commission he has taken inspiration from a painting in the Potteries Museum & Art Gallery collection of a Staffordshire Moorlands landscape by George Cartlidge. As the character Dr Bird he enquires about geology of Staffordshire and the Black Country and the research and performative elements are both fact and mythology, connecting places and periods by an eccentric and unreliable guide.
The work is an extension of a Turning Point West Midlands residency and is written about in ‘Radar’ by Jane Morrow.
